چکیده

Multiple sclerosis (MS) is a demyehnating disease of the central nervous system with a focal loss of myelin (plaques) which leaves the bared axon cylinder physically intact for quite a long time after the onset of the disease The variety of localization of plaques and the great number of abnormal modes of impulse conduction give rise to the complex functional deficits seen in MS (Waxman 1981) No specific and completely effective agent against MS has been discovered so far (Lauer and Firnhaber 1988)

Effects of some potassium channel blockers on the ionic currents in myelinated nerve.

The effects of some potassium channel blockers on the ionic currents and on the so-called K(+)-depolarization in intact myelinated nerve fibres were studied. 4-AP, and in particular, Flaxedil, proved to be selective K(+)-current blockers. However, TEA, a crown ether (DCH18C6), a longchained triethylammonium compound (C10-TriEA), capsaicin, and the extract from the medicinal herb Ruta graveolens...

Effect of ATP-Dependent K+ Channel Openers and Blockers on Serum Concentration of Aldosterone in Rats

There are many reports for involvement of ATP-sensitive potassium channels in pancreatic, cardiac and vascular smooth muscle cells. This study examined the effect of single doses of K+ channel openers diazoxide, minoxidil and K+ channel blockers chlorpropamide, glibenclamide on serum concentration of aldosterone in male rats. Blood samples were obtained 60 minutes after drug treatment and serum...

Recombinant Expression of Margatoxin and Agitoxin-2 in Pichia pastoris: An Efficient Method for Production of KV1.3 Channel Blockers

The K(v)1.3 voltage-gated potassium channel regulates membrane potential and calcium signaling in human effector memory T cells that are key mediators of autoimmune diseases such as multiple sclerosis, type 1 diabetes, and rheumatoid arthritis. Thus, subtype-specific K(v)1.3 blockers have potential for treatment of autoimmune diseases. Several K(v)1.3 channel blockers have been characterized fr...

P123: Stimulating In Vivo Remyelination (IVR): A New Approach for Multiple Sclerosis Treatment

Multiple sclerosis (MS) is one of the most common neuroinflammatory disorders that causes disability in the young adults. In this disease immune-driven demyelination and following that inefficient remyelination occurs. Therapies for this disease are limited, especially those to enhance myelin repair. Cellular reprogramming using defined genetic factors is a way to produce remyelinating Oligoden...

Role of the potassium channels in vasorelaxant effect of asafoetida essential oil

Objective: In a previous work, we showed that asafoetida essential oil (AEO), from oleo-gum resin of Ferula asafoetida L. from the Apiaceae family, has a vasodilatory effect. This effect was both endothelium-dependent and endothelium-independent. The present study was designed to determine whether potassium channels and intracellular calcium release contribute to AEO-i...
